Shelter and Citizens Advice progress

30 January 2023

For our grants that fund our Shelter and Citizen’s Advice workers, we submit quarterly reports and so we are sharing some of the headlines and also a case study each from the workers to give a bit of context to what they ‘deal’ with, how long issues can take to resolve and the different people and teams involved to make these ‘successes’ happen. We’re also all very aware that while the attached cases are DEFINITELY successes (well done and thank you to our wonderful workers!), there are so many that are ongoing and some that don’t have a ‘positive outcome’ for a huge amount of reasons. NB on the following stats; we don’t report exactly the same for each worker due to the funding requirements so there won’t be the same stats for each to compare.

CA Headlines – 1st October – 31st December 2022:
*53 new cases
*17 of these expected to achieve financial gain – through uplift in benefits, wages or new employment
*10 referrals were made into the CA specialist debt team
*while no debt has yet been written off, 3 clients are continuing to engage with the debt team, so there may be a ‘figure’ to report next quarter

Shelter Headlines – 1st October – 31st December 2022:
*47 foodbank sessions attended
*167 clients ‘seen’ which can be anything from a brief chat, to advice there and then, a foodbank voucher issued, signposted or referred on
*25 new cases taken on by Shelter
*76% of client cases are single adults
*63% of client cases are in receipt of benefits
*Total of £7,180.16 of ‘housing related financial gains’ was sought – this might be Housing Benefit, reduced rent, or a ‘discretionary housing payment’
*Total of £5,455.45 in ‘debts (excluding rent arrears) written off’ – and this is just in the Oct-Dec period!
